THE ORIGINS OF THIEZACTHE ORIGINS OF THIEZAC
In the 6th century, Hermits came to settle in the cave located at the foot of the rock of Saint Michel. Tradition has it that the town of Thiézac was created around inns which would have been built to accommodate the many pilgrims, who came to recommend themselves to their prayers. According to Chanoine Chabeau, Thiézac would be the name of the first innkeeper who came to settle there. The Cantal dictionary refutes this version and thinks that the origin of the village would be older and date from the conquest of Gaul by Julius Caesar. The name of Thiézac would associate a Celtic root and a Greek root meaning "Place loved by the Gods". The Vicar, Louis Buchon, in his monograph of Saint Martin, does not agree because he says who in our mountains would have had knowledge of the Greek language? He leans more towards a Latin definition of the etymology of the word Thiézac which would be "God is there". The presence of the Hermits would confirm his reasoning. By imagining Thiézac lost in the mountain with a difficult path as the only access, one can suppose that his creation is well linked to the Hermits. As to the origin of the name, we have no certainty.
